Water treatment plants operational again after Sg Selangor oil pollution

Malaysiakini

Three water treatment plants affected by a suspected oil spill at Sungai Selangor this morning are now fully operational again, said Selangor Menteri Besar Amirudin Shari.
"I have been informed by Air Selangor that all the water treatment plants which were closed due to the pollution this morning have begun to operate fully again just now," he said in a Twitter posting today.

Earlier, the National Water Service Commission (Span) had said in a separate statement that a suspected oil spill was detected around Bestari Jaya in Selangor at 9.30am.

This had led to the closure of three water treatment plants that were supplying water to consumers in the area.

"Based on the speedy action of all parties involved, the oil pollution was contained and all plants which were closed before this is now fully operational again at 11.55pm and no water disruption was recorded," the statement read.

Span said they are taking this incident seriously, especially in light of the movement control order (MCO).

Anyone caught in the act of polluting water sources will have harsh action taken against them under the Water Services Industry Act 2006, the commission said.

The MCO was put into effect starting March 18 in an attempt to control the Covid-19 pandemic.

Though it was initially supposed to end on March 31, Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin has since extended it to April 14. - Mkini
