Defence Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob today warned the management of apartments and condominiums to allow unit owners or tenants to return to these units.
This following the four-day temporary period from May 7 allowed for interstate travel for those stranded in various states to return to their homes.
The Senior Minister (Security Cluster) issued this warning against the management of apartments and condominiums who barred unit owners and tenants from returning to the units following the period for interstate travel from May 7 to May 10.
“That (apartment and condominium managements are barring unit owners from entering their premises) is not the directive of the government but their own action.
“It is hoped they do not take their own action as all must abide by the SOPs (standard operating procedures) or directives issued by the government,” Ismail said.
“I know there are those allowed to come back from the kampung (villages in other states) to KL (Kuala Lumpur) during the four days that we allowed (interstate travel).
“Many went back but they could not enter their respective apartments and condominiums as they were prevented from doing so and they were forced to rent at other places until they are allowed to return to their respective homes.
“It is hoped that the management of apartments and condominiums would allow and give permission to these unit owners or renters of the apartments and condominiums to return to their respective homes. Do not prevent them from doing so anymore,” he said.
He was speaking during a press conference from Putrajaya that was broadcast live online this afternoon.
He was answering a question from the media over complaints from unit owners and renters who were not allowed to return to their apartments and condominiums by the managements of these premises during the four-day interstate travel period.
These unit owners and renters were then forced to find alternative places to stay at for the time being including being forced to rent new accommodations.
Meanwhile, he also directed the management of strata and multi-floor buildings such as condominiums, flats and apartments, among others to allow contractors to enter the premises and conduct renovations and repairs.
Ismail noted that there was a lot of confusion which resulted in these premises not allowing repairs or renovations, despite the government having allowed this during the movement control order (MCO).
“I need to emphasize that the management of these multi-floor buildings need to give permission to the contractors to renovate or repair the buildings.
“We hear that there are (contractors) not allowed to go in (the buildings) despite us having allowed it.
“However, contractors still need to abide by the SOPs whether by the CIDB (Construction Industry Development Board), MKN (National Security Council) or PBT (local authorities),” Ismail said.
He added that these contractors can obtain the SOPs from the website of the Works Ministry, MKN or the local authorities. - Mkini
