Efforts by six Bersatu grassroots to cite those responsible for calling a supreme council meeting without its party chairperson Dr Mahathir Mohamad might come to nought.
According to a high ranking party source familiar with disciplinary issues, the meeting didn't take place and hence the issue was "academic".
On May 10, Malaysiakini had reported that invitations for the supreme council meeting scheduled for the following day were not extended to Mahathir, deputy president Mukhriz Mahathir and three other key office-bearers.
This had prompted speculation that Mahathir and Mukhriz - who do not support party president Muhyiddin Yassin as prime minister - might be sacked during the meeting.
Hours after the report was published, the meeting was postponed indefinitely. Bersatu working secretary Capt (R) Muhammad Suhaimi Yahya who signed the letter did not state a reason for this.
Bersatu's supreme council has not had its monthly meeting since Feb 23.
According to the source, the decision not to invite Mahathir and others to the meeting was a "non-issue".
"Was the meeting actually held? You check. It is a non-issue. Why bother about an 'academic' matter?
"Those people were unhappy, is not a disciplinary issue. In fact, the whole thing is not a disciplinary matter at all.
"Intention by itself will never be a crime in criminal law!" stressed the source.
Yesterday, six Bersatu leaders and members wrote to the party's disciplinary board to call for an investigation against those who called for the meeting.
According to the letters sighted by Malaysiakini, the six claimed the initial decision to exclude the party chairperson from the meeting was invalid and in violation of Bersatu's constitution.
Currently, Bersatu's leadership is split in two - most are loyal to Muhyiddin while the rest are loyal to Mahathir.
Mahathir had declared that he would be sitting on the opposition bench when Parliament reconvenes on May 18. - Mkini
