Sabah varsity records first positive Covid-19 case

KOTA KINABALU: A student became the first Covid-19 positive case detected at a local university here.
Sabah Health Department director Datuk Dr Christina Rundi said that the detection came when they carried out screening of all students before they were allowed to return to their homes.
"It was detected at a local university as part of screening to manage the movement of students in Sabah," she said in a statement here Wednesday (May 13).
On Monday (May 11), 10 positive cases were detected in Sabah, including students returning from Peninsular Malaysia.
According to Dr Rundi, out of the 7,000 students in Sabah allowed to return home, a total of 1,408 students had so far returned to their own districts in the state.
Another 1,612 have gone back to Labuan, Sarawak and the peninsula.
It is understood that Universiti Malaysia Sabah has temporarily stopped their students from returning home.
Dr Rundi warned yesterday that returning students ordered to do home quarantine have to strictly abide by the Health Department's order.
She said students who had ignored the home quarantine order could be charged under the Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases Act 1988.
She said the department was actively screening all passengers arriving at the Kota Kinabalu International Airport, Tawau and Sandakan airports from Peninsular Malaysia and Sarawak.
"They must comply with home quarantine," Dr Rundi said, adding that family members should ensure the students abide by the order and at the same time give moral support throughout the quarantine period.
As of Tuesday, Sabah has a total 328 positive cases with 31 still being treated at hospitals.
She said as of May 11, some 56,929 Covid-19 tests were carried out. This included 1,968 tests done with six repeat tests and one new case detected. - Star
