CORONAVIRUS | The pregnant woman who tested positive for Covid-19 in Kelantan had permission from the police to make the journey from Ampang for medical reasons.
However, Defence Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob said instead of going straight to her residence in Kelantan, the woman had met up with several relatives and had physical contact.
"She wanted to give birth in her hometown. Police allowed it for health reasons, and because she wanted to give birth at her kampung, so we allowed it. Then it turned out she was positive (for Covid-19).
"But before she went back to her home (in Kelantan) she had met with several people, close and distant relatives and because they missed each other, they hugged," Ismail said at a press conference in Putrajaya today.
The woman was Kelantan's first new positive case after becoming a green zone.
Ismail said because she had tested positive, her whole kampung is now subject to health screenings and is being treated as a lockdown area although an enhanced movement control order had not been declared.
He said authorities are unsure how many elderly and children have been exposed and fear the risks they face.
He said this is a cautionary tale for others not to make unnecessary trips back to their hometowns.
Interstate travel has been restricted to emergency cases only and Ismail said fines will be issued for those who attempt to cross state lines.
The senior minister said although the government has given some leeway to celebrate Hari Raya Aidilfitri on the first day, the people should not take advantage of this especially if it put their loved ones at risk.
"If we go back to our hometowns, will it impact our grandparents, our families, our children and grandchildren?"
"If we want to save them, then there's no need to balik kampung, celebrate at your own homes," he advised. - Mkini
