The Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Ministry is investigating a private hospital in Kuala Lumpur for alleged profiteering over the price of three-ply face masks.
A ministry's enforcement team had performed a check on the private hospital on May 13 for purportedly over-charging their patients for three-ply masks.
“The check was done based on information and complaints from a member of the public who was charged RM201.60 for 18 pieces of three-ply masks worn by the nurse who treated the patient.
“This price is too high as it is RM11.20 per piece as compared to the set maximum price which is RM1.50 per piece,” said the ministry's enforcement division in a statement today.
The enforcement team had confiscated several transaction documents from the private hospital for the investigation, they said.
This case is being investigated under Section 11 and 14 of the Price Control and Anti-Profiteering Act 2011, which deals with those selling or offering to sell a price-controlled item above the set maximum price and those profiteering through the sale or offer to sell a product, respectively.
The ministry's enforcement division director Iskandar Halim Sulaiman said the ministry is serious in ensuring the face mask supply can be easily acquired at a price that does not go above the set maximum price.
He also hopes that the public will provide information to the ministry over any suspicious activity that may be related to price gouging or profiteering through their hotline at 1-800-886-800 or 03-8882 6088 or 03-8882 6245. - Mkini
