MOH aims for single-digit cases in coming one or two weeks

Malaysiakini

CORONAVIRUS | The Health Ministry is aiming to achieve a single-digit Covid-19 case in a week or two amidst the conditional movement control order (MCO), said director- general Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah.
"Based on the latest development, although we have three areas under the enhanced MCO, and new clusters have been identified, we hope to retain the number of cases to two figures every day.
"And our target is to reduce the number of cases that we see, and achieve a single figure in the coming week or two," Noor Hisham said in a media conference in Putrajaya today.
The latest locality under the enhanced MCO is at the areas in Petaling Jaya Old Town which has been enforced since yesterday.
In reaction to the extension of the conditional MCO until June 9, which was announced by the Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin earlier, Noor Hisham stressed that the medical frontliners will continue to closely monitor new cases.
"We have reopened the economic sectors which were carefully done and in a controlled manner. What we must do is to closely monitor the new cases, and whether the public complies with the standard operating procedure," he said.
Commenting on the Setia Alam cluster, Noor Hisham said the contact tracing linked to the 12 cases is still ongoing.
"So far we have identified positive cases (in the area) and took necessary action to curb the outbreak.
"We urge those who have been exposed to come forward for health screening."
Noor Hisham (photo) added that the enhanced MCO is not necessary in Setia Alam as the number of cases is still under control and remained at 12.
He noted that the reason behind the infection among the foreign workers is because they live in a big group in an apartment.
"If we see from (cases in) Selangor Mansion, Malayan Mansion, and Menara City One, up to 30 individuals cramped to live in one house.
"This is one of the factors of the spread (among them)," he said.
Noor Hisham added that the contract tracing is also being conducted for the chicken factory cluster in Pedas, Negeri Sembilan.
Targeted approach shows positive impact
A targeted approach had shown a positive impact in identifying new Covid-19 cases, Noor Hisham said.
Until yesterday, the ministry had targeted eight groups.
They were the Seri Petaling tabligh gathering group and their close contacts; students and staff of madrasah and tahfiz schools linked to the Seri Petaling gathering; Malaysians who returned from abroad and placed under quarantine; and the Health Ministry personnel.
Also included were residents of localities under the enhanced MCO; Kuala Lumpur wholesale markets and other markets related to it; foreign workers at construction areas in the red zone; and senior citizen care centres.
