The Muafakat Nasional brand will again surface, this time for the Chini by-election, said BN secretary-general Annuar Musa.
He said although both Muafakat Nasional component parties - Umno and PAS - are also in the loose Perikatan Nasional governing coalition, campaigning as Muafakat Nasional bore fruit in the past and thus Umno will continue to do so.
"Umno has signed an agreement with PAS to (work as) Muafakat Nasional. Therefore, during the Chini by-election, the spirit of Muafakat Nasional will continue as it was before," Annuar (above) said.
The Chini state legislative assembly seat fell vacant after the incumbent Abu Bakar Harun, an Umno member, died on May 7.
Abu Bakar won the Chini seat by a large margin against candidates from PAS and Bersatu. All three parties are now part of the federal government.
This time around, only Umno will be fielding a candidate for Chini.
The Election Commission will meet tomorrow and decide on a polling date.
Meanwhile, Annuar said campaigning as Muafakat Nasional would not have an effect on PN ties.
"We welcome criticisms by the opposition (against this decision). We would be worried if they don't.
"There are no problems. Both (Umno and PAS) are part of PN and this makes us stronger," he said. - Mkini
