CORONAVIRUS | Special advisor to the prime minister on public health Dr Jemilah Mahmood has mooted the idea of a lockdown during Hari Raya Aidilfitri as a preventative measure against a spike in Covid-19 cases in the country.
This comes after she noted that there has been a rise in Covid-19 cases in South Korea and Germany.
“Very worried to see the rise in cases in South Korea and Germany and how iftar gatherings (are) proving deadly.
“If we don’t take measures to prevent the spread (of Covid-19), we may lose all gains made. God forbid. Let’s be vigilant.
“Perhaps a lockdown during Raya is a good preventive measure? Let’s preserve our progress,” Jemilah said in a posting on Twitter today.
She also tagged Health Ministry director-general Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah in a reply to the posting.
Yesterday, Defence Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob said visits during Hari Raya, Hari Gawai and Hari Kaamatan will be restricted to the first day of the celebrations, and only between family members.
The number of visitors throughout the day will be capped at 20 people.
Noor Hisham had reminded that social distancing guidelines must be followed during the visits.
On May 10, Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin had announced that the conditional movement control order (MCO) will be extended to June 9.
Though he said interstate travel for Hari Raya Aidilfitri, Pesta Kaamatan and Hari Gawai is not allowed, they can still be celebrated between those living in the same state. - Mkini
