KUALA LUMPUR: The MCA is disappointed with a handful of politicians who prey on issues related to race and religion in an extreme manner, which it says is threatening the identity of Keluarga Malaysia.

Party secretary-general Chong Sin Woon said the extremism was a worrisome trend and urged all political parties to reject any form of racism and extremism to maintain the multi-racial identity of the Malaysian Family.

“It is time for MCA, in fact, any political party in this country, to rise and be united and say ‘no’ to racism and extremism. It should be a strong signal to show that enough is enough. Politicians have long been using race, religion, even education, language as a tactic and this is dangerous.

“We want to restore the people’s power to make this nation multiracial and multicultural which respects the diversity of religions, cultures and languages so as to maintain the identity of the Malaysian Family,” he said in his opening speech at the Wanita MCA annual meeting.

At a press conference later, Chong, when asked if the alliance between Parti Warisan and Muda would threaten MCA’s position in GE15, said it was quite difficult to predict at the moment as too many new parties were being formed, especially in West Malaysia.

Yesterday, Warisan president Mohd Shafie Apdal said his party was also open to accepting any other party to join it in facing GE15, as it had officially spread its wings to the Peninsula.

Later, Wanita MCA passed 21 resolutions covering issues of politics, economy, education and law, among others after they were debated in a hybrid manner due to the Covid-19 restrictions.

One of the adopted resolutions expressed support for the government in enacting more comprehensive anti-sexual harassment laws and urged the government to amend the Law Reform (Marriage and Divorce) Act 1976 to classify refusal to pay alimony or non-payment of alimony as a crime. - FMT
