MACC denies detaining PBK president

SARAWAK POLLS | MACC chief Azam Baki has flatly denied a report that Parti Bumi Kenyalang (PBK) president Voon Lee Shan was detained by MACC officers this morning.

Instead, the Batu Lintang candidate had only been instructed to give a statement to the MACC.

"This is not true. He was asked to be present to record a statement," Azam told Malaysiakini in a text message.

Earlier, Voon (above) said he was driving his car across Kenyalang Park in Kuching when he was instructed to stop.

“I was in the car, suddenly a car followed and stopped me. They confiscated my car keys and tried to detain me.

"I don't know what reason I was detained for, but they can't do this, this is wrong," he told Malay daily Utusan Malaysia.

PBK is fielding 73 candidates in the Sarawak election and has pledged to seek the state's peaceful exit from Malaysia, similar to Singapore.

PBK had already filed a suit against the governments of Sarawak, Malaysia and the United Kingdom seeking a declaration that the Malaysia Agreement 1963 was invalid.

Voon's party also promises to distribute at least 30 percent of annual revenue from crude oil production to all Sarawakian voters, end stateless and provide free education for all Sarawakians for selected colleges, universities, as well as vocational and technical schools in the state. - Mkini
