MCA Youth wants the Works Ministry to review plans to phase out Touch 'n Go and SmartTag use at toll booths saying it was too rushed.
The government has said the phase-out will be gradual and has not announced a timeline for phasing out the two toll-payment systems.
MCA Youth vice-chief Chua Hock Kuan said although setting up more radio-frequency identification (RFID) scanner booths is welcome, motorists should be given adequate time to transition.
He added that the move to switch to the new technology was seen as rushed.
"The move is seen by many as something too rushed.
"MCA Youth is aware that the government wants to optimise facilities in order to give better service to the public, but the people's struggles must be taken into consideration," he said in a statement today.
On Thursday, the government announced that RFID toll booths will be available on the North-South Expressway starting Jan 15.
The Works Ministry said that, eventually, Touch 'n Go and SmartTAG will be replaced by RFID, but did not mention a start date for phasing out the older payment systems.
Chua said the government should only start phasing out Touch 'n Go gradually once a majority of vehicles are equipped with RFID tags. - Mkini
