PETALING JAYA: The earthquake which struck off the coast of Sumatra early this morning did not pose any tsunami threat to Malaysia.
The meteorological department said the 6.7 magnitude earthquake was felt in parts of Peninsular Malaysia, especially Selangor, Negeri Sembilan, Melaka and Johor.
“There is no tsunami threat to Malaysia,” it said on Twitter.
Reuters reported that the quake hit at 4.06am local time (5.06am in Malaysia) at a depth of 21km, with its epicentre 167km west of the coastal city of Pariaman.
This comes after a 6.2 magnitude earthquake in Sumatra on Jan 25 was felt in Selangor, Perak, Negeri Sembilan, Melaka and Johor.
While authorities received several emergency calls from buildings across the city, there was no tsunami threat to Malaysia as well then. - FMT
