KUALA LUMPUR: The Stormwater Management and Road Tunnel (SMART) has failed to solve the problem of flash floods in the city as seen by the floods in several parts of the city yesterday and last December, Lim Lip Eng (PH-Kepong) said.
Debating the King’s address in the Dewan Rakyat today, the DAP MP said the tunnel was touted by the then Barisan Nasional government as the solution to Kuala Lumpur’s flood problems when it was completed in 2007.
“What happened yesterday and in December showed that the SMART tunnel is a failed project,” he said.
Lim also urged the government to form a special team to provide a holistic solution to mitigate the floods that are happening regularly in the city.
The team, he suggested, must consist of senior officers from the relevant ministries and led by an internationally-renowned flood expert.
Several parts of Kuala Lumpur and Selangor were hit by flash floods yesterday after heavy rainfall in the evening. There were no casualties reported.
The flash floods came less than three months after disastrous floods hit the Klang Valley and several parts of the country last December.
Lim also said that Kuala Lumpur was hit by floods 48 times between October 2015 and September 2020, citing “news reports” but without providing the sources.
“This shows that floods happen an average of 10 times per year. Is this a feature of a world-class city?
“We have Menara 118 that has become the second-tallest building in the world, but the drains around it are clogged with rubbish, and the roads surrounding it get flooded every time it rains heavily.
“No foreign businessman will want to invest in our country if floods happen 10 times a year,” he said. - FMT
