BUTTERWORTH: Work to upgrade Penang’s two ferry terminals with airport-like facilities will be completed in August, Penang Port Commission chairman Tan Teik Cheng said today.
The improvements at the Sultan Abdul Halim terminal in Butterworth and Raja Tun Uda terminal in George Town, were more than 60% complete and are ahead of schedule.
He said work on the terminals, occupying an estimated area of 400 square metres each, is expected to be fully completed by August.
“We estimate that each terminal will be able to accommodate 300 people at a time and will be operational before National Day,” he told reporters after working visits to both terminals today.
The upgrading project began last year when Penang’s vehicular ferries were retired. The new ferries will be used to carry pedestrians, motorcycles and bicycles.
Tan said the terminals will be equipped with modern facilities and would meet the needs of disabled persons who use the ferry services.
Five new ferries, costing RM30 million, would be in operation next year. “Based on forecasts, there will be a total of 1.64 million passengers using the ferry services next year and the number is expected to reach 1.68 million by 2028,” he said.
Between 680,000 and 711,000 bicycles and motorcycles are expected to use the ferries. - FMT
