BN has not decided on who will be its prime minister 'poster boy' for the next general election, said Ahmad Zahid Hamidi - amid questions on whether the Umno president will muscle out current premier Ismail Sabri Yaakob.
Speaking to reporters in Johor Bahru this morning, the BN chairperson said whether it would be Ismail Sabri or someone else would only be announced after they have come to a decision.
"We have a 'musyawarah' (discussion) system and togetherness among decision-makers (in BN) who normally would sit together and discuss to ensure that the party continues to lead the way.
"We will only announce after that," Zahid said during a press conference at the MIC election operations centre in Tampoi.
He also said the eve of the Johor polls was not the right time to announce who BN's poster boy will be.
Zahid was responding to a question of whether Ismail Sabri will be BN's face in the 15th general election.
Call for snap polls
The Umno president has been putting pressure on the prime minister - who as party vice-president, is his subordinate - to call for snap polls as soon as possible.
The BN chief told reporters today that BN should go into the general election the soonest after the conclusion of the Johor state election, which it is confident of winning, so as not to lose momentum.
However, Ismail Sabri supporters in Umno want party elections to be held first, in a bid to oust Zahid.
Ismail Sabri has not openly challenged Zahid or expressed an opinion on snap polls.
However, prior to Ismail Sabri's ascension as prime minister, it was speculated that Zahid had aspired to take the post for himself but failed to get enough support from Umno MPs.
Zahid had previously served as deputy prime minister prior to BN's defeat in the 2018 polls. - Mkini
