Chin Tong heartbroken 'friend' Nur Jazlan playing race card

JOHOR POLLS | Johor DAP chief Liew Chin Tong, who has described state Umno deputy chief Nur Jazlan Mohamed as a "friend", said he is heartbroken that the latter has resorted to playing the race card.

This was after Nur Jazlan was set to speak at an online show titled "Cina DAP tipu Cina Johor" (DAP Chinese lying to Johor Chinese).

"I thought the Johor Umno deputy chief is an intelligent person. But apparently, this is his level of mentality.

"Playing racial politics non-stop. He has forgotten that he is half Chinese. I'm heartbroken," he said in a Facebook post.

Nur Jazlan, when contacted, merely told his critics to tune in to the show.

The former Pulai MP had previously also attacked DAP leaders for constantly switching constituencies.

However, in his response on March 2, Liew said Nur Jazlan was a friend and who he did not want to "say bad things about".

He stressed that when DAP leaders switched seats, they moved to dangerous areas to open a new political front.

"As a political leader, it is about service but also leadership - we are here to lead southern Johor into the future," he had said.

Liew started out his political career as the MP for Bukit Bendera in Penang during the 2008 general election before moving to Johor to become the Kluang MP in 2013.

In the 2018 general election, Liew challenged MCA president Wee Ka Siong in neighbouring Ayer Hitam but was narrowly defeated.

He is now contesting in the Perling state seat on his party's instructions despite his preference for a federal contest.

Campaigning for the Johor polls kicked off on Feb 26. Johoreans will go to the polls on March 12. - Mkini
