GEORGE TOWN: The sight of several policemen wearing uniforms from the early days of the police force attracted the attention of visitors at popular tourist spots here today.
Some tourists mustered enough courage to approach the policemen for pictures.
The policemen were making their rounds in uniforms that were worn between 1807 and 1948, as part of activities to mark Police Day yesterday.
A tourist, Rashidah Mohamed, 58, from Johor Bahru said she was surprised and excited at the presence of the policemen at Armenian Street.
“Suddenly, I saw the policemen, eh, are they actually policemen. Why are their clothes so different. Indeed, I was very excited when I saw the policemen with old uniforms here.
“I was snapping pictures in the area at that time and I immediately took photographs of the policemen on patrol and approached them to take pictures with them,” she said.
Another tourist, Zulkiflee Yusof, 52, from Melaka, said tourists in the Armenian Street area shifted their attention away from the regular attractions to policemen in old uniforms.
“Their uniforms really look good and I was impressed. This approach is good. This can help our youths to know the uniforms of policemen in the past. It is very educational to the public.”
District police chief Soffian Santong said his personnel went on patrol in old police uniforms in conjunction with Police Day yesterday.
He said the patrols today and tomorrow would be conducted at several tourist areas including Armenian Street and Beach Street. - FMT
