‘Court cluster’ critics wasting ammo on Najib, says Saarani

Saarani Mohamad says the opposition’s tactics involving attacks against Najib Razak are outdated and have been ineffective.

MUAR: Barisan Nasional’s opponents will not get very far with their attacks on the “court cluster” because it is an outdated and ineffective narrative, said a senior coalition leader.

“Just look at Najib’s aura,” said Saarani Mohamad, the Perak BN chief, referring to former prime minister Najib Razak. “He can go to Chinese schools and flats. The people cheer him wherever he goes. This is an indication that the people miss BN,” he told FMT in an interview.

Saarani said the “court cluster” attacks would not dent BN’s chances at securing a two-thirds majority in the Johor elections.

BN’s opponents, including Pakatan Harapan, Perikatan Nasional and Pejuang, have been harping on the “court cluster”, which refers to the group of Umno leaders facing trial for corruption, abuse of power and money laundering, among others. The leaders include Najib and Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

Saarani, who has been campaigning in Johor, said BN’s opponents were wasting their “ammunition” with their attacks on Najib because he was not contesting in Johor nor did he hold any position in Umno.

“He does not want to become the Johor menteri besar. To me, they have the wrong target and are wasting their ammunition.”

He said the sentiments on the ground in Johor were similar to what he saw in Melaka, with many Malays and Chinese supporting BN.

He said voters clearly wanted a strong and stable government to run the state, and experience had shown that BN could deliver where PH and PN had failed.
