Mohamad Hasan said Umno would not “be in love” with those who have "cheated” on them in cooperative relations.
Despite not mentioning names, the Umno deputy president’s stern allusion could be read as an address to the party’s allies under Muafakat Nasional, namely PAS.
He said Umno would never team up with parties that openly set to replace them.
“All this requires political superiority and wisdom. It is not just about taking whatever is there, like with the formation of Perikatan Nasional (PN).
“Frogs, chameleons, ducks, anything that passes or flies in front of them is sufficient.
“What is certain is that we will not invite a party that has openly geared towards replacing Umno. What more with the DAP and its chauvinist agendas.
“And to those with wandering eyes, who yearn for benefits from everyone, is friendly with Umno’s enemies yet at the same time is ‘in love’ with Umno, our stand is to not tend to the cheaters, only to the loyalists,” he said tonight during the opening ceremony of the annual general meetings of Umno’s wing parties at the World Trade Centre.
Also present were three Umno vice-presidents, namely Ismail Sabri Yaakob, Mahdzir Khalid and Mohamed Khaled Nordin.
Strained relationship
Umno had previously collaborated with PAS through Muafakat after BN’s collapse in the last general election.
The initial cooperation was smooth sailing, up until PAS decided to join Bersatu in Perikatan Nasional.
The party’s relationship with PAS became increasingly strained when both parties clashed in the Malacca and Johor state elections.
In a related matter, Mohamad said Umno must pioneer cooperation in governing the country, through a joint agreement or based on a common agenda, for the sake of the future.
“Enough with forming alliances lines, pacts and coalitions. All of that is merely cosmetic. It is not based on a common agenda for a better Malaysia but just political tolerance for the sake of shared power.
“Umno must pioneer cooperation in governing the country through a ‘joint agreement’ or coalition agreement that is based on a similar agenda for common future.
“It should the pillar that underlines cooperation in the formation of a government.
“And in five years, we will return to the voters in our separate ways. Let the voters determine our future and achievements, as well as choose their next government,” he said.
Mohamad added that although Umno was likened to a “duck with a broken leg”, the fact was that the party had now regained the support of the Malays. - Mkini
