Ensure good ventilation in buildings to curb viruses – Arthur

All new and existing buildings should have good ventilation and maintenance of indoor air quality which is at par or better than the current industry standards, said Deputy Works Minister Arthur Joseph Kurup.

He said this is to ensure that bacteria and viruses are not easily transmitted in an indoor environment and to have a superior air quality to address health concerns in the post-Covid-19 era.

“Therefore, it is imperative for players in the construction industry to adopt new and innovative technologies in doing business and to provide solutions,” he said when launching the Malaysia Engineering Exhibition and Conference and the first Air-conditioning, Refrigeration and Ventilation Expo in Kuala Lumpur today.

Arthur said the Covid-19 pandemic had compelled all parties to adopt new technologies consistent with the new normal.

He said the government recognised such new health concerns and companies which upgrade their office ventilation system would qualify for a tax deduction of up to RM300,000 to cover the cost of renovating and refurbishing their premises.

This is to ensure that offices comply with the requirements on ventilation and seating capacity under the new normal, he said.
