Ex-govt dept director charged over RM1.29mil bribes

 

Abel Ongkunik was allowed bail of RM100,000.

KOTA KINABALU: A former Sabah government department director was today charged with 29 counts of accepting bribes amounting to RM1.29 million at the special corruption court.

Abel Ongkunik, a former director at the Sabah ports and harbour department, is said to have accepted money from two different companies.

The 50-year-old pleaded not guilty to all the charges in front of sessions court judge Abu Bakar Manat.

According to the charge sheet, Abel was accused of accepting over RM1.29 million from Syarikat Alaf Kembara Sdn Bhd and Syarikat Easport Sdn Bhd, between 2017 and 2018.

The money was meant as an inducement to the accused to appoint the companies to carry out ship towing services.

The charges were framed under Section 17(a) of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Act 2009 and is punishable under Section 24(1) of the same Act.

Abu Bakar fixed April 29 for re-mention of the case. He also fixed a RM100,000 bail with a deposit of RM30,000. The court also ordered Abel to surrender his passport.

Nartiah F Mirchelle Sambatan appeared for the prosecution while the accused was represented by lawyers from the firm Tetua PJ Perira & Dasan. - FMT
