Former student activist Fahmi Zainol guns for PKR Youth chief post

Former student activist Fahmi Zainol today officially announced that he would contest the post of PKR youth chief for the party's upcoming election.

Rawang assemblyperson Chua Wei Keat is his running mate and is gunning for the position of deputy chief.

Fahmi, who is also the head of Penang PKR Youth, also announced a full list of candidates from his team.

"I, Fahmi Zainol, offer myself as the candidate for the head of PKR Youth Malaysia for the 2022 to 2025 term," he said at a press conference at the Kuala Lumpur and Selangor Chinese Assembly Hall today.

He said the PKR election for its youth wing for the 2022 session was different from before.

"This election is an election based on the unification, movement and determination of young people in PKR to gain support ahead of the 15th general election (GE15).

"We are confident and always strive to embrace all members in every branch throughout Malaysia to be with Fahmi Zainol and friends," he added.

Fahmi, 31, is a former student leader of Universiti Malaya and once faced disciplinary action after inviting PKR President Anwar Ibrahim to speak on campus in 2014.

He joined PKR in 2015.

According to him, the main policy of his team is to gain the support of young people, especially the group of voters aged 18 to 21 and first-time voters.

"Statistics show that 5.8 million people aged 18 and above will be voters in the next GE.

"The statistics released by the Election Commission recently regarding the percentage of young people who went to the polls in the Johor state assembly elections is quite low - 173,177 voters out of a total of 706,082 voters, which is only 24 percent of young people who went to the polls and this is quite worrying.

"Therefore, the approach that needs to be taken by the youth wing in facing GE15 also needs to be diversified," he said.

Welcome rivals

Meanwhile, Fahmi said he welcomed another former student activist Adam Adli who is also said to be contesting for the tip post.

"I welcome his presence into the political arena.

"We've been together fighting a lot of student-related issues before.

"So, if he contests, this is more of a sibling contest," he added.

For the record, Adam has yet to confirm whether he will contest or vice versa, although he recently spoke of the party as the natural choice for him.

The 33 -year -old former activist said he would confirm the matter before nomination day if he decides to contest.

The following is a list of candidates announced by Fahmi:
