Govt has no moral right to increase Covid-19 fines, says Guan Eng

PETALING JAYA: The federal government has no right to impose increased fines on those who breach Covid-19 rules as its own leaders do not comply with the SOPs, says DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng.

In a statement, Lim accused ministers of double standards “by openly breaching the Covid-19 SOPs that they themselves have introduced”.

This comes following reports that health minister Khairy Jamaluddin was seen giving a fist bump to a Barisan Nasional (BN) supporter while campaigning in the Johor state elections.

Azrol Rahani, Muda’s candidate for the Bukit Permai seat in the Johor elections, had asked why he was fined RM1,000 for giving fist bumps to supporters on nomination day last Saturday and whether Khairy would also be fined.

The government is seeking to amend the Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases Act 1988 (Act 342). This would see an increase in fines for SOP breaches to RM1 million for companies and RM10,000 for individuals.

“If approved, such harsh penalties can be enforced at will by the health director-general, who will be granted unfettered and unlimited powers which cannot be questioned or challenged,” said Lim.

He said Pakatan Harapan and DAP would oppose such amendments giving draconian powers to the enforcement authorities to impose harsh penalties and fines. - FMT
