PETALING JAYA: The death of an Indonesian man in police custody in Sarawak last week was confirmed to have been caused by a heart problem, Bukit Aman said today.
The federal police’s integrity and standards compliance department (JIPS) director Azri Ahmad said a post-mortem carried out by the Sarawak general hospital found the 48-year-old to have died due to coronary artery disease.
“The case has been classified as sudden death but the probe is ongoing before the matter is handed over to the coroner,” he said.
The 48-year-old man, whose identity was not revealed, was the 12th case of custodial death recorded in the country this year.
The man had been arrested for drugs and immigration-related offences at the Bintulu district police headquarters.
The previous custodial death involved a Myanmar national, who died at the Tanah Merah Hospital in Kelantan on Feb 26 due to Covid-19. He had been detained at the Jeram Perdah police station in Pasir Mas for immigration-related offences.
Many groups, especially civil society organisations and MPs, have raised the alarm over the high number of custodial deaths that have been recorded in the first two months of the year. - FMT
