Issues key to Harapan's revival, not wasting time on negotiations - Akmal

Pakatan Harapan needs to focus on issues faced by the people of its hopes to revive its fortunes instead of wasting time on political negotiations, said PKR Youth chief Akmal Nasir.

He also stressed that the effort to strengthen the opposition should be focussed on the Harapan component parties.

"If we want to strengthen, it is not by wasting time on negotiations and the likes.

"To strengthen Harapan is to champion people's issues.

"In Pahang, for example, who dares to speak up for the people on the issue of environment and logging?" Akmal (above) said when officiating the Indera Mahkota PKR division meeting in Kuantan.

Semambu assemblyperson Lee Chean Chung, who is also the Indera Mahkota PKR chief, was also present.

PKR's Amanah and DAP partners have repeatedly pushed for a "big tent" approach - and an effort for Harapan to strike cooperation with other opposition parties.

DAP and Amanah, for example, struck a deal with Muda during the Johor polls but negotiations between PKR and Muda fell apart.

Akmal urged all leaders to focus on the people's issues and not be distracted by political machinations by the ruling parties.

This was amid a push by an Umno faction for an early general election, against the wishes of their partners in the ruling coalition.

Akmal added that PKR should also focus on defending its parliamentary seats which were taken away by "traitors", in reference to PKR leaders who defected and brought down the Harapan government in 2020 through the Sheraton Move.

"We must remember that where there was betrayal, the seats belong to the party, to PKR, not to any individual.

"So, we will focus on wresting them back in the coming general election, apart from defending what we have won," he said. - Mkini
