Newly-elected opposition assemblypersons in the Southern region of Johor are calling on the incoming menteri besar to enact a bipartisan committee to prepare for the border reopening with Singapore on April 1.
They said that the committee’s purpose would be to prepare for the various aspects of border reopening, including tackling congestion on the Causeway and Second Link, as well as the reopening of the cross-border economy and trade.
In a joint statement, the assemblypersons reiterated their policy agenda for Southern Johor, including better jobs, pay and business ecosystem, public transport and housing, empowering local communities, urban planning, flood mitigation and a new deal in federal-state government relationship.
The statement was signed by Andrew Chen Kah Eng (DAP-Stulang), Liew Chin Tong (DAP-Perling) and Amira Aisya Abd Aziz (Muda-Puteri Wangsa), Liow Cai Tung (DAP-Johor Jaya), Marina Ibrahim (DAP-Skudai), Wong Bor Yang (DAP-Senai) and Arthur Chion Sen Sern (PKR-Bukit Batu).
The group pledged that they would work closely with local authorities to ensure a better quality of life and welfare of the people, as well as infrastructure and amenities.
“We recognise the crucial role played by local governments for the development of southern Johor.
“We will work closely with these local authorities in southern Johor to ensure the infrastructure and amenities, quality of life and welfare of the people are well taken care of.
“We will also do our best to connect these local governments to the people as it is the key to ensure smooth implementation of local government policies for the benefit of the people,” they said.
According to the statement, the local authorities include the Johor Bahru city council, Iskandar Puteri city council, Pasir Gudang city council and Kulai city council, which have a joint annual revenue of nearly RM1 billion.- Mkini
