JOHOR BAHRU: Johor is the state worst-affected by the border shutdown, said national recovery council chairman Muhyiddin Yassin.

He said about 300,000 Johor residents who commuted to Singapore for work had lost their source of income as a result of the border closure.

“I do not know their current status. Are they facing challenges of getting on with life and putting food on their table?

“This is the problem that we need to address,” he said at a dialogue session, here today.

Muhyiddin said the reopening of borders would enable the country to earn more than RM80 billion in revenue from the viable sectors with more than 28 million foreign tourists expected to enter Malaysia.

The recovery council has previously suggested that international borders be fully reopened as early as March 1 without the mandatory quarantine requirement.

However, the health ministry has said new regulations were being prepared for approval from the Cabinet. - FMT
