Bandar Kuching MP Dr Kelvin Yii has won a three-way contest for the top spot in DAP Youth's national leadership while Ketari assemblyperson Young Syefura Othman, better known as Rara, has won the deputy chief post.
Yii secured 232 votes to beat outgoing DAP Youth secretary Eric Teh Hoong Keat (158 votes) and Bandar Utama representative Jamaliah Jamaluddin (55) to lead the movement for the 2021-2024 term. He will be taking over from Pasir Pinji assemblyperson Howard Lee.
Syefura captured 212 votes to win the deputy chief contest ahead of Batu Kitang branch chairperson Abdul Aziz Isa Marindo (169) and Alice Lan Suet Ling (64).
In a Twitter post thanking his supporters and his opponents in the contest, Yii said he expected the movement to play a crucial role in coming times.
"I am confident in the potential and ability of young people to chart a better future and I believe DAP Youth will continue to be a mover and thinker that will bring creative, and innovative solutions to the issues faced by young people and all Malaysians," he said.

Also elected to the four vice-president slots were Teh Swee Leong (Kedah), G Annun Nancy (Negeri Sembilan), K Jason Raj (Penang) and PS Keristinah (Johor). The defeated contestants included Subang assemblyperson Michelle Ng, Luyang representative Ginger Phoong and Iskandar Fareez.
At least one of the four slots was reserved for a female candidate.
In the contest for the secretary's post, Wayne Ong Chun Wei (Selangor) defeated Jenny Choy (Perak) by a margin of 240 votes to 204.
Another 15 candidates were elected to the Youth committee itself including elected representatives such as Bukit Tunku assemblyperson Lim Yi Wei.
Two prominent defeated candidates were Ayer Keroh representative Kerk Chee Yee and the party's Johor publicity secretary (women's wing) Marina Ibrahim whose vote tally was the lowest among all contesting.
DAP is holding its national congress at the IDCC Convention Centre in Shah Alam this weekend and today's central committee election is expected to see a change of guard with long-time secretary-general Lim Guan Eng handing over the reins. - Mkini
