JOHOR POLLS | BN won the Johor election by a landslide, securing the coveted two-thirds majority.
BN won a total of 40 seats, above the 38-seat threshold required for a two-thirds majority in the 56-member Johor state assembly.
Umno contributed a total of 33 seats for BN while MCA and MIC were responsible for four and three respectively.
The Election Commission said 1,426,573 people or 54.92 percent of registered voters cast their ballots.
The landslide win will allow BN to govern alone, without the backing of Perikatan Nasional (PN).
Prior to the state election, BN only had 16 seats and had to govern with the support of another 12 seats from PN.
In this snap election, PN only won three seats. Bersatu won two seats while PAS took one.
Meanwhile, Pakatan Harapan and its allies won a total of 13 seats. Ten seats were won by DAP while PKR, Amanah and Muda won one respectively.
Johor BN chief Hasni Mohammad is the favoured candidate for menteri besar to lead the new BN-led state government.
This is the first time the coalition has secured a supermajority in Johor since the 2008 general election.
BN won in Johor during the 2013 general election but was denied a two-thirds majority by a single seat.
Other parties, such as Pejuang, Warisan and Parti Bangsa Malaysia (PBM), were resoundingly defeated as they failed to win any seats and most lost their deposits.
