KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysian badminton players stormed into two finals at the Swiss Open championship to be played tonight at the St Jakobshalle, Basel.
In the men’s doubles, the world number 17 pair of Nur Izzuddin Rumsani-Goh Sze Fei will take on Indonesians Fajar Alfian-Muhammad Rian Ardianto who are ranked number nine.
In the semifinal last night, the Malaysians defeated Indonesians Pramudya Kusumawardana-Jeremiah Rambitan in straight games of 21-18, 21-18.
In the other semifinal, Fajar Alfian-Muhammad Rian Ardianto defeated the top Malaysian pair of Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik 22-20, 13-21, 21-8 in a 51-minute match.
Meanwhile Malaysia’s independent mixed doubles pair Goh Soon Huat- Shevon Lai Jemie also made it to the finals.
The world number 13 pair upset compatriots Tan Kian Meng-Lai Pei Jing, ranked 10 in the world, 21-17, 24-22 after a 53-minute battle in their semifinal match.
They will take on Germans Mark Lamsfuss-Isabel Lohau, who are number 15 in the world ranking.
In the women’s doubles, Malaysia’s professional women’s doubles pair of Lim Chiew Sien-Vivian Hoo lost in the semifinals.
Ranked 44 in the world, the duo went down 21-10, 21-16 to world number nine Gabriela Stoeva-Stefani Stoeva of Bulgaria after a 39-minute clash. - FMT
