The police have arrested a man after a video of him physically abusing a young child while a woman attempted to protect the child was widely circulated on social media.
Bukit Aman Sexual, Women and Child Investigation Division (D11) principal assistant director Siti Kamsiah Hassan told Malaysiakini that the man is the stepfather to the five-year-old boy in the video.
“The victim was slapped and his hands were restrained by the suspect who is the victim’s stepfather.
“The victim’s mother has only been married to the suspect for one month. The suspect has been arrested and remanded,” Siti said to Malaysiakini when contacted.
The man was investigated under Section 31(1) of the Child Act 2001, she added.
The video, which is two minutes and 50 seconds long, shows the man restraining both the child’s hands as the child is crying.
The video appears to be taken without the knowledge of the man from a stationary angle from the side of a sofa.
The man appeared to be scolding the boy before he suddenly slapped the child to the ground.
A woman immediately attempted to rush in to help the child but she was pushed away by the man. She then pleaded with the man to stop hitting the child.
The man started twisting the arms of the child at one point and the woman rushed in again and pulled the boy away from him.
She then ran into the other room while carrying the boy as the man followed her, before running into the first room again shouting as the man chased her.
They disappear out of the frame of the video but the woman can be heard shouting as the boy is crying, along with the sounds of some thudding.
The man appeared to be shouting the same phrase in Tamil at the woman over and over again while they were out of the frame.
Eventually, the man was seen pushing the woman, who was carrying the sobbing child, onto the sofa before he tried to kick and hit the child in the woman’s arms.
In response, the woman shouted at him in panic as she shielded the child in her arms. The video ends as the man continues scolding them. - Mkini
