Minister sees red over sexually suggestive scene in TV drama

Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Religious Affairs) Idris Ahmad has chastised a video clip of a sexually suggestive scene from a drama that was shared by actor Zul Ariffin.

In a Facebook post today, Idris (above) said he was disappointed with the teaser video of the drama ‘Perempuan Itu’ as he deemed it stepping over the line.

“I will contact the relevant parties to get their advice so that this matter can be prevented and changed with discretion.

“I took a deep breath when, in this month when all faithful believers should be pursuing taqwa (piety to Allah), a drama will be aired that seems to be tainted with indecency which I think is overboard and should be reprimanded,” he added.

Scene is director’s cut, may not air

Meanwhile, Malay-daily mStar quoted the drama's director, Ain Sharif, as saying that the leaked scene was part of the second recording which may not be shown on television.

“Yes! I directed the scene... the scene that Zul shared was a director’s cut that may not be shown on television.

“What netizens viewed was a second version recording if found to be suitable, and was meant for publicity purposes," Ain said.

"I didn't know that Zul would share the scene on Instagram. I was surprised to know that people were talking about this, but things have already happened. As a director, I have to take responsibility.

“In fact, intimate scenes are less than 10 percent in this drama. The scene was produced to portray Sera's character, played by Siti Hariesa, as the second wife of Emir (Zul Ariffin)," she added.

Entertainment should not invite immorality

Idris explained that entertainment is not prohibited in Islam but there must be strict discipline, especially when it involves overly sexual scenes which are clearly inviting immorality.

The minister stressed that he has no intention of obstructing the entertainment industry in the country, but he must speak up when it goes against the nature of religion.

The 23-second video is no longer available on the actor’s Instagram but has been shared by others on social media.

In the clip, Zul is pushed against a wall by Siti Hariesa before he takes off his shirt and is seen embracing her.

That scene is interspersed with another scene where Siti Hariesa – dressed in a maid outfit – feeds whipped cream to Zul before he lifts her up and embraces her.

Conveying a message

Further, mStar reported that the director explained she was only carrying out her responsibility in the role to convey the drama's message and storyline which was based on real-life incidents.

"Even before filming, we discussed with the actors and they were okay to act in such scenes. We made the second version recording to make the drama more interesting but it all depends on the television station to use it or not.

"I realise there are some scenes that are quite sensitive for the audience, but they have to watch (the series) first and understand the story, then they will know what we are trying to convey. In fact, there are many positive messages in this drama," Ain said.

Actor Erma Fatima

She also clarified that public criticism against senior actor and director Erma Fatima were misguided as she was wrongly assumed to be the drama's director when her actual role was as the scriptwriter and producer.

"She is the scriptwriter and I visualised the characters according to the writing... Even during filming, Erma repeatedly told me not to do scenes that are too daring because then it will not be able to go on television.

"She knew that there would be a scene of them together, but did not expect me to interpret it in that way. So it is not appropriate for people online to criticise Erma because the scene was my instruction," Ain added.

Apart from Ain, the 30-episode drama is also directed by Isma Yusof.

“Perempuan Itu” starring Zul, Mimi Lana and Siti Hariesa is set to be shown in April during the fasting month of Ramadan on TV3. - Mkini
