Muhyiddin opposed Employment Act amendment when in PH, says Kula

Former human resources minister M Kula Segaran claims that the home ministry gave ‘special approvals’ for thousands of migrant workers, without the knowledge of the human resources ministry.

KUALA LUMPUR: M Kula Segaran (PH-Ipoh Barat) claims that former home minister Muhyiddin Yassin had been against amending a section of the Employment Act on the intake of foreign workers when he was in the Pakatan Harapan government.

Debating the Employment Amendment Bill 2021, Kula, the former human resources minister, said the bill had first been drafted when PH was in Putrajaya and was to be tabled in March 2020.

He said the home ministry objected to amending Section 60K from the start as it wanted “exclusive control” on the intake of migrant workers.

Kula said there was an issue over migrant workers entering the country, with the human resources ministry clueless on where they worked and their total number.

M Kula Segaran.

“At that time, the home minister, Pagoh (Muhyiddin) totally disagreed, saying (amending Section 60K) would interfere with the home ministry’s affairs.

“This narrow-minded view gave rise to many problems,” he said.

Kula claimed the home ministry gave “special approvals” for thousands of migrant workers, without the knowledge of the human resources ministry.

“Did these workers get protection? Did the employers pay their wages according to the law?

“So I pushed for this and obtained the Cabinet’s approval. The Attorney-General’s Chambers then approved this (amendment).

“The home ministry must release information on all matters related to workers to the human resources ministry because they have the expertise in this matter,” the DAP MP said. - FMT
