No extension for income tax filing

PETALING JAYA: The Inland Revenue Board (LHDN) will not offer any extension period and reminded all taxpayers to submit their tax return within the stipulated time. But it said an additional 15 days would be given to those who submit their BE and B forms via the efiling system.

“So far, there is no plan to extend the deadline since the situation is back to normal.

“The deadline to submit the BE form is on April 30 while it is June 30 for the B form.

“Since we want to encourage taxpayers to move from manual to online, we are giving those who are using efiling ample time, which is until May 15 for those submitting the BE form and July 15 for the B form,” an IRB spokesman said when contacted.

Efiling submissions for the 2021 Income Tax Returns for E, BE, B, M, BT, MT, P, TF and TP Forms began on March 1.

The status of return forms, the refund process, eLedger and monthly tax deductions can be checked on MyTax.

“Taxpayers should ensure all documents such as salary statements, receipts, invoices and other related documents are organised and kept for at least seven years as stipulated under Sections 82 and 82A of the Income Tax Act 1967.

“This must be done to ease the process of efiling and compliance checks by LHDN in the future,” added the spokesman.

Individual taxpayers are eligible for a tax deduction of RM9,000, RM6,000 for those with disabilities and RM5,000 for a husband or a wife with disabilities.

Those who pay alimony to their ex-wives are also eligible for a RM4,000 relief.

An additional RM1,000 in relief is dedicated to vaccination expenses.

Another additional relief given for the year 2021 is a RM500 deduction for any purchase of sports equipment, rental or entrance fees to any sports facilities and registration fees for any sports competitions.

Those who earn RM37,333 annually or RM3,111 per month are subject to tax for the year 2021.

Married couples can opt for a separate assessment or file in a joint assessment.

Those who file in their assessment separately are subject to tax if they have a child and are earning RM39,333 annually or RM3,278 per month, or have two children and are earning RM41,333 annually or RM3,444 per month.

Couples with no children who opt for joint assessments will be subject to tax if they earn RM48,000 annually or RM4,000 per month, or if they earn RM50,000 annually or RM4,167 per month but have only one child, or if they earn RM52,000 annually or RM4,333 per month and have two children.

The public can get more information via the Hasil e-Book at a Glance 2022 which can be downloaded from https://mytax.hasil.gov.my.

Separately, taxpayer Nurul Fazilah Kamal, 29, said she would be submitting her income tax return in the next few days to avoid technical issues.

“I don’t like doing things at the last minute. There is always a fear that the website will overload and crash, so normally I will file in my income tax return the earliest possible,” said the public relations executive from Ampang.

Another taxpayer Siti Rasidah Aziz, 47, from Ulu Kelang, said she would file in hers by today.

“The refund of excess money can be used for other expenses especially since Hari Raya is also not that far from now,” said the single mother, who is a bank manager. - Star
