Rayer offers to represent Shamsul against Najib’s suit

RSN Rayer has offered to represent PKR information chief Shamsul Iskandar Mohd Akin for free in the defamation suit filed by Najib Razak.

KUALA LUMPUR: Jelutong MP RSN Rayer has offered to help PKR information chief Shamsul Iskandar Mohd Akin, who has been sued for defamation by former prime minister Najib Razak.

Touching on efforts to combat corruption during the debate on the King’s speech, Shamsul told the Dewan Rakyat that he had just received a letter of demand from Najib and that he would answer the Pekan MP (Najib) in court.

Rayer immediately stood up to offer legal representation to Shamsul (PH-Hang Tuah Jaya).

“As a lawyer, I would like to offer to represent you for free so we can go all out against Pekan,” he said.

Najib is suing Shamsul for defamation over a Facebook post on the 1MDB affair.

Najib said the PKR man had failed to retract, correct or apologise for claiming that the former prime minister had stolen RM2.6 billion in 1MDB funds to support his lifestyle.

In denying Shamsul’s claim, Najib argued that he was not charged with misappropriating funds but rather with money laundering.

In his post, Shamsul also accused former Goldman Sachs Southeast Asia chairman Tim Leissner and fugitive businessman Low Taek Jho (better known as Jho Low) of using the public’s money to support their lifestyle.

Rayer also touched on Najib’s March 2 speech at the Dewan Rakyat on 1MDB. Tony Pua (PH-Damansara) had alleged that Najib had misled the house on the payment of 1MDB debt and wanted him to be referred to the Parliamentary Rights and Privileges Committee over his remarks.

Rayer, who was ejected during Najib’s speech for interrupting him, asked Shamsul whether he agreed that the rakyat should be aware that Najib was trying to deceive them while campaigning for Barisan Nasional in the Johor elections.

“I agree Jelutong!” said Shamsul.

Dewan Rakyat speaker Azhar Harun has written to Najib to seek clarification on the matter. - FMT
