PETALING JAYA: The women, family and community development ministry will discuss with the relevant agencies on the action to freeze the bank accounts of men who fail to pay alimony to their former wives.

Its minister, Rina Harun, who welcomed the government’s announcement on the action, said her ministry would try to implement the measure this year with the cooperation of these agencies.

“Based on the information we received, many ex-husbands have failed to provide alimony.

“So, with this new measure announced, the ex-wives should be able to receive it,” she told reporters at an event in Kota Damansara here today.

“Ex-wives not paid alimony can complain via the Talian Kasih line at 15999 or the other KPWKM platforms,” she added.

Yesterday, Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob, who is also Umno vice-president, when winding up the debate at the party’s general assembly, announced that the bank accounts of men would be frozen if they violated court orders to provide maintenance for their ex-wives.

He said this was among the matters decided upon by the government in protecting women.

He also said that widows were allowed to work from home during their “iddah” (waiting) period (of four months and 10 days) following the husband’s death.

Employers could not force them to come to the office during this period of bereavement to show respect for their situation.

“This is a welcome move as after losing her husband, a woman has many matters to attend to, especially those involving the children and home,” said Rina in response to the move.

“The Covid-19 pandemic has proven that we are capable of completing tasks when working from home,” she added. - FMT
