KUALA LUMPUR: The Registrar of Societies (RoS) rejected 86 applications to register political parties in the last four years, the Dewan Rakyat was told.
In a written reply to Hannah Yeoh (PH-Segambut), the home ministry said the RoS’ decision to reject any application to register a party was done in accordance with the Societies Act and its by-laws.
It said that up to Jan 31, a total of 67 political parties and 86,786 branches had been registered by RoS.
“There are still 25 pending applications from February 2020 until now. The RoS is in the midst of verifying their documents,” it said.
Last year, both Pejuang and Muda filed applications to be registered as political parties but their bids were turned down by RoS and the ministry.
They subsequently filed court actions and succeeded in compelling the government to register them. - FMT
