KOTA KINABALU: A Sabah party leader has urged finance minister Tengku Zafrul Aziz to clarify the confusion over a revenue sharing formula on federal taxes collected from Sabah.
Parti Cinta Sabah (PCS) treasurer-general Murshidi Abd Ghaffar said Zafrul should explain whether two articles of the Federal Constitution had been invalidated, as alleged recently.
He said the minister should explain the truth regarding a federal gazette in 1970 that purportedly amended a formula for a federal special grant to Sabah based on tax revenue collected in the state.
Murshidi said the two constitutional articles were “sacrosanct to the people of Sabah” in entitling the state to resources needed to develop the state.
Sepanggar MP Azis Jamman had recently accused the federal government of making an unconstitutional change and of keeping the amendment a secret.
However, deputy chief minister Jeffrey Kitingan said the original formula had been reviewed as provided under the constitution, and the amendment order was no secret as it was published in the government gazette. - FMT
