Rivers have reportedly overflowed, affecting Sentul, Jambatan Sulaiman, Lebuh Pasar, and Jalan Parlimen, with Sungai Gombak exceeding dangerous water levels.

The Malaysian Fire and Rescue Department also confirmed several other areas affected by flash floods including Jalan Air Keroh to Air Panas in Setapak, Taman Salak Selatan, Taman U Thant in Jalan Ampang, Taman Sri Petaling, Kampung Periok in Kampung Baru and Taska Roskani on Jalan Cheras Baru.

Smart Tunnel closure

As of 4.45pm, the Stormwater Management and Road Tunnel (Smart) has been closed.

The New Pantai Expressway (NPE) has also shut the Kuchai tunnel as of 4.20pm, requesting highway users to find alternative routes.

Internet users have posted on social media pictures of flooded highways with cars submerged in water.

A video of a submerged police petrol car has also gone viral.

Brickfields district police chief Amihizam Abdul Shukor clarified the police car in question was located in Kuchai Lama.

“At 3.30pm mobile patrol vehicle (MPV) officers stopped for prayer at the Kuchai Lama police station where it rained heavily all of a sudden.

“The officer tried to get out of the affected area to no avail as it was blocked by other vehicles that were also trapped.

“The officer had left the MPV to save himself because the vehicle was submerged by the flash flood,” he said in a statement, adding that the officer suffered no injuries.

National Craft Day event disrupted

A craft expedition held in conjunction with National Craft Day 2022 has experienced a total blackout and minor flooding due to the rain.

According to a Facebook post by NGO Gerai OA, some vendors were seen weaving orders via a flashlight while waiting for the flood to subside.

Many carparks have been affected by floods, especially in the Bukit Bintang and Pasar Seni areas.

Some videos also depicted pedestrians climbing their cars to escape the water.

Yesterday, the Malaysian Meteorological Department government agency issued a warning of possible flash floods in Petaling Jaya, Klang and Shah Alam.
