BATU PAHAT: Tycoon Lee Kim Yew campaigned with former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad in Ayer Hitam today, urging the Chinese community to vote for Pejuang in the Johor state elections.
At a lunch with the Pejuang chairman, Lee praised Mahathir for his exploits in leading Malaysia during his first tenure in the top post.
He said Malaysia would have been in deep trouble during the 1997 Asian financial crisis if not for Mahathir.
Lee also said Mahathir had no personal incentive to come out of retirement and return to politics after 15 years out of the political arena, but did so for the sake of the nation.
The property tycoon also took a jab at former prime minister Najib Razak, urging the members of the community against mixing with “people convicted by the courts”.
“We should make this the gold standard of the country, a person who has already been convicted should not be allowed to roam around freely,” he said.
Mahathir received a warm reception from the Chinese community in Ayer Hitam, with around 50 members of the community present to meet the Langkawi MP.
It was Mahathir’s first time on the campaign trail in Johor since his recent episode in hospital. - FMT
