BATU PAHAT: Umno Supreme Council member Puad Zarkashi has backed deputy president Mohamad Hasan’s call for the next general election to be expedited, saying the current administration in Putrajaya remains unstable.
According to Puad, though the government of the day is led by Umno through its vice-president Ismail Sabri Yaakob, it is fragile.
Thus, he said, it would be better for Malaysians to be given the mandate to choose what government they wanted.
“Although Umno holds the post of prime minister, anything can happen. Umno should give the mandate to the people to decide so that there will be a more stable government,” he said in an interview with FMT.
Mohamad had said recently that GE15 should be held soon regardless of the outcome of the Johor polls as the current administration in Putrajaya was not elected by the people. He added that the political instability had affected the economy and the people.
However, Pasir Salak MP Tajuddin Abdul Rahman accused Mohamad of pressuring the prime minister to hold GE15 when the government was stable thanks to the memorandum of understanding signed with Pakatan Harapan last year.
Puad said differences in opinion among Umno leaders were unavoidable, but asked if Malaysians wanted a government that changed hands multiple times after a general election.
He maintained that political instability would deter foreign investors and that Malaysia needed a strong administration that could not be threatened by other parties.
He also denied that he was “devoted” to Umno leaders labelled by others as the “court cluster”, namely Najib Razak and party president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, saying he only supported the two men’s struggle for the party.
“It’s not because I’m devoted to the individual or the material goods they have. As long as they uphold the same struggle I fight for, that is what will tie us together.” - FMT
