JOHOR BAHRU: Muda secretary-general Amira Aisya Abd Aziz has voiced disagreement with the belief that Malays are close minded and resistant to change.

Noting that such a negative opinion of Malays is held by some sections of Malaysian society, she said it might have been right at one time but was no longer acceptable.

The Malays of today were looking for solid policies and dependable leaders to take the nation forward, she said.

Amira is Muda’s candidate for the Puteri Wangsa seat in the Johor elections.

She told FMT it would be wrong to think of Malay voters as people who placed importance only on race and religion.

“Largely, Malays just want to know who is taking care of their bread-and-butter concerns. So, if you are able to introduce policies that can assist them, they will have faith in you.”

She called for improvements in the education system to ensure benefits for all the people regardless of race.

For instance, she said, Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) should be open to all.

“I have always believed this and I’m not scared to say so,” she said, adding that equal access to education did not mean the Malays would lose their rights. “Even if UiTM is opened to other races, Malays can still enrol as usual.

“What is important is that the education system should be standardised and everyone should get access to high-quality education.”

She also said voters in Johor wanted to know that they could trust the politicians they were voting for, especially after the toppling of the Pakatan Harapan government following defections from Bersatu and PKR.

She said Muda, as a “very fresh” party with a clean slate, had some advantage over other parties. - FMT
