Umno secretary-general Ahmad Maslan has urged the Registrar of Societies (ROS) to approve his party’s constitutional amendments soon.
Speaking at the Umno information division retreat at the party's Institute Latihan Memperkasa Ummah training centre in Janda Baik, Pahang yesterday, Ahmad said the ROS had previously approved similar amendments to MCA’s constitution.
“Umno is seeking to delay its leadership elections, similar to what MCA has done and approved by the ROS. They are now allowed to do so.
“If it is approved, (our leadership) election will only be held after a general election. If we hold the Umno elections before the general election, then the ‘tree’ will be felled.
“There will be trouble for Umno and a return to the ‘22 months of problems’ which we saw after the last general election,” he said, according to Umno-online, the party’s official website.
MCA’s annual delegates meeting had on December 2019 resolved to amend the party constitution to, among others, stipulate that the party will only conduct its leadership election no later than six months after the conclusion of a general election or after 36 months from the previous party election, whichever is later.
The ROS only approved the constitutional changes earlier this year.
Umno sought similar amendments to its constitution during the party’s extraordinary general meeting on May 15.
Under its present constitution, Umno had already exercised a stipulation that allowed the party to postpone elections until December.
Ahmad was speaking to Umno division-level information chiefs from all over the country during the three-day retreat.
Other Umno top brass at the event were Prime Minister and Umno vice-president Ismail Sabri Yaakob, Pahang Menteri Besar and Pahang Umno chief Wan Rosdy Wan Ismail, and Umno information chief Shahril Hamdan. - Mkini
