Anti-hopping law: Cabinet wants select committee to refine bill

The cabinet wanted two issues to be refined by the special select committee working on a bill to restrict MPs from switching parties, said Law Minister Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar.

He said the select committee would deliberate on those two issues on June 7 and subsequently "finalise" the bill.

However, Wan Junaidi said he was bound by Standing Order 85 and could not reveal further details.

The minister said this in a statement today following the cabinet meeting yesterday, wherein attorney-general Idrus Harun had presented the bill.

"Cabinet did not object to the draft proposed by the select committee. However, the cabinet raised two issues to be deliberated and refined by the select committee," said Wan Junaidi.

On May 27, Wan Junaidi revealed the bill only sought to amend the Federal Constitution and applied to MPs.

He added that the new law would not cover MPs who are sacked by their parties nor parties which switched coalitions.

Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob had promised to enact laws to discourage MPs from switching parties as part of his confidence-and-supply agreement with Pakatan Harapan.

Such laws were supposed to be enacted during the first sitting of Parliament this year. That deadline lapsed on March 24.

There have been 39 MPs that have switched parties since the 2018 general elections. - Mkini
