PETALING JAYA: Umno’s internal conflict over when to call the next general election has led to DAP being blamed again, says DAP secretary-general Loke Siew Fook.
He said a reprimand by Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob, apparently aimed at DAP, was actually meant for Umno who had been pressuring him to dissolve Parliament and pave the way for an early general election.
Loke said: “He can’t simply say that his Umno men do not respect the King, so DAP has been made a victim in Umno’s internal conflict.”
Ismail had said earlier today that only the Yang di-Pertuan Agong can decide whether to allow Parliament to be dissolved, although as prime minister he had the authority to advise the King on dissolving Parliament.
His statement came after Loke criticised him for being inconsistent on whether to hold an early general election, to which Ismail said: “DAP might not respect the King, but I do.”
However, Loke said in a Facebook posting that he had never disputed that the power to dissolve Parliament lay with the King, as stated in the Federal Constitution.
He said he had only criticised Ismail for being “inconsistent” about when the elections will be held, and denied ever asking the prime minister to announce the date of Parliament’s dissolution. - FMT
