Former health minister Dzulkefly Ahmad does not plan to contest in the next general election, according to a report.
The two-term Kuala Selangor MP from Amanah reportedly told The Malaysian Insight in an interview yesterday that he felt it was time for him to step aside and allow younger leaders the opportunity to take the reins.
“I’ve had two terms in Parliament and 22 months as a minister. I wish I could do more.
“So far as I’m concerned, it’s finished. It’s already the end of it,” he was quoted as saying.
According to the report, Dzulkefly (above) said serving two terms is “just enough” for a politician. He added that there needs to be continuous leadership change, which is missing in Malaysian politics.
The two-term limit is not necessary for younger politicians, he said, though he nevertheless encouraged them to take a break before returning to politics.
“If you are young, then you (can) have a break and come back more enriched, embellished, skilful and more competent.”
‘I wish to groom young leaders’
Asked if he would reconsider if his party requests him to contest, the Amanah strategy director was adamant and said he had already told the party of his intention to move on a year ago.
Instead, Dzulkefly wished to groom young leaders and hoped to put an end to toxic politics in the country.
Leaders should be able to address issues and politics regardless of their background, especially if they want to be an MP, he said.
“I would want to assume a role, hopefully seeing and grooming technocratic leaders, younger crop of professional leaders, even activists.
“I really wish to assume this role in a more significant way,” he added.
Apart from Dzulkefly, DAP’s Bangi MP and former deputy international trade and industry minister Ong Kian Ming also announced his intention not to contest the 15th general election (GE15), which must be held before September next year.
Speculation has also been rife that Bakri MP Yeo Bee Yin and Damansara MP Tony Pua would also opt out of GE15, but both DAP parliamentarians have been tight-lipped on the matter. - Mkini
