Fahmi Fadzil demands justice for 98,607 scam victims

In March, it was reported that there were 98,607 online fraud cases involving losses totalling RM3.3 billion nationwide from 2017 until 2021.

PETALING JAYA: Lembah Pantai MP Fahmi Fadzil has demanded justice for the 98,607 victims involved in online scams.

He questioned why the government has not ordered banks to conduct forensic audits to determine where the money involved in the scams went and who the final recipients were.

“Unfortunately to this day, only the mule account holders used by the scammers are facing trial rather than the heads of the scam operations themselves,” he said on Facebook.

Bukit Aman commercial crime investigation department assistant director Rozeni Ismail said during this period, more than 30,000 suspects were detained and 25,000 of them were charged in court.

Fahmi pointed out that if bank officials could follow the “money trail” in former prime minister Najib Razak’s 1MDB case and determine who the final recipient of the funds was, why couldn’t Bank Negara Malaysia and police do the same with the online scam cases.

“Are Bank Negara and Bukit Aman unable to identify who the culprits are and drag them to court?” he asked. “Where did the RM3.3 billion go and was it used for corrupt activities or other crimes?” - FMT
