PM confident Bersatu won't topple him amid 'big tent' manoeuvres

Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob has expressed confidence that Bersatu will not move to topple him.

This is amid manoeuvres by Bersatu to forge alliances with other opposition groups to combat Ismail Sabri's BN coalition in the next general election.

Utusan Malaysia reported that Bersatu's supreme council discussed in a meeting on June 8 the possibility of replacing Ismail Sabri as prime minister without going through an election if it could secure support from Pejuang, Warisan, and Pakatan Harapan.

However, the prime minister was dismissive of this when asked for comment.

"If it happened in a Bersatu meeting, I wouldn't know because I wasn't there.

"Rumours said it (toppling me) was discussed, but that was denied by Bersatu deputy president Ahmad Faizal Azumu immediately after the rumours came out, and he said it was not discussed.

"For now, Bersatu, PAS, GPS, and others including Harapan signed the memorandum of understanding (with the government), and continue to support the government," he said during a press conference in Kuala Lumpur today.

Political stability

Ismail Sabri was also confident that there was no political instability at the moment, and that parties were not clashing with each other.

He said the stability allowed the government to focus on efforts to heal the economy.

On the status of Bersatu defector Zuraida Kamaruddin in the cabinet, the premier said he had yet to meet the plantation industries and commodities minister.

He reiterated that for now, Zuraida will continue to carry out her duties.

Bersatu is pushing for Zuraida - who is now the president-designate of Parti Bangsa Malaysia (PBM) - to be dropped from the cabinet.

Bersatu president Muhyiddin Yassin is seeking an audience with Ismail Sabri to discuss a replacement.

However, Ismail Sabri said he informed Muhyiddin that the meeting would only take place after he met Zuraida.

On when the next general election will be held, he said this was not a public matter and that no prime minister has ever discussed this publicly.

His own party Umno is pushing for snap polls soon but the prime minister has indicated some reluctance to comply with the party directive. - Mkini
