Police are investigating lawyers for standard operating procedure (SOP) violations after they gathered in Kuala Lumpur today to march for judicial independence which was aborted after authorities prevented them from making their move.
In a statement, Dang Wangi district police chief Noor Dellhan Yahaya said the probe is under Regulations 6 and 7 of the National Recovery Plan's transition to the endemic phase.
Regulation 6 prohibits marches, while Regulation 7 bans assemblies according to the gazetted regulations.
Hundreds of lawyers had gathered at Padang Merbok this morning with the intention to march to Parliament and hand the government a memorandum demanding for judicial independence.
However, the ‘Walk for Justice’ event was thwarted after police formed a human barricade and refused to allow the demonstrators through.
Negotiations between the Malaysian Bar - who organised the rally - and police, did not provide results.
Dellhan said besides SOP violations, the lawyers will also be investigated under Section 15(3) of the Peaceful Assembly Act, for failure to comply with restrictions imposed by police.
He said police plan to question all those present at the rally.
The Bar has said that it would initiate legal action against the police for denying them their constitutional rights. - Mkini
